Living in Melbourne

Melbourne, Australia is the capital of the State of Victoria with a population of around four million people. The convenient, modern city is located on Port Phillip Bay and enjoys a mild climate. It is a leading education centre, rich in cultural diversity.

An international study recently concluded that Melbourne is the world’s most liveable city. International students quickly feel at home in multi-cultural Melbourne where people are friendly and helpful.

Oxley Christian College is located in the Outer Eastern Melbourne suburb of Chirnside Park, part of the Shire of Yarra Ranges. Visit the Yarra Ranges Shire Council website for more information about the area.

Courses Offered

The Australian school year commences late January and concludes mid-December. Years 7 to 10 students are provided with a broad-based general education designed to prepare them for the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) studies, the government accredited course.

Years 11 and 12 (VCE) students are helped to select a two-year program from a range of Arts / Humanities, Business, Mathematics, Science and Technology Studies which meet the necessary pre-requisites for gaining the VCE and university selection. Results at Year 12 only are used for university selection.

Year 1 to Year 6 students may be accepted upon discussion with the College and upon arrangement of suitable living arrangements.  Homestay services are not available to students of this age.

Integrated English Course

Students are encouraged to enrol in the Oxley Christian College Integrated English program. This will enable students to build a solid foundation for success in Australian academic studies and consolidate their English skills to enable their confident entrance into the appropriate year levels.

Student Care

On arrival, new students are welcomed at the airport and taken to their accommodation. College office staff will assist them with transport arrangements, fee registration, visa applications, international student health cover, textbook lists, uniform, etc. Pastoral care of students is provided by a team of teachers and counselling staff. Academic support and assistance is provided by the Head of Senior School and the Year Level Coordinators.

Orientation Program

Extensive orientation programs welcome and assist students to understand their new environment, expectations of the school, study techniques and homework required. Students in Years 11 and 12 will attend orientation camps at the beginning of the school year.

Cultural Adjustment

Study and living in a different culture is both exciting and challenging. An extensive pastoral program exists to ensure students are adapting well to their new environment and making progress with their studies.

Accommodation

The College arranges homestay accommodation for students. The College carefully selects families for this program to ensure that students are placed in a safe and secure environment and enjoy life and study in an Australian home.

Each student has a private room and accommodation includes the provision of all meals (usually a varied menu of Asian and Western food), laundry, access to general facilities, as well as care and support by the host family. Host families will support students and help them to settle into life in Melbourne. Homestay is an excellent way for students to improve their English.

Extra Curricular

Camps

School camps are an important, integral aspect of learning at Oxley Christian College. All students attend at least one camp per year and these vary according to age and year level. Snorkelling, SCUBA diving, marine studies, bushwalking, leadership, university orientation and city-based learning are just some examples of camps currently being offered.

Music

Many music opportunities exist for those students who are keen to play an instrument, join a choir, sing in a choral group, share in an ensemble, or join a concert band. Our expanding Music Department is also able to help students who aspire to do music as a subject in VCE.

Church and Youth Club Activities

The church, situated on the College property, provides pastoral oversight to all staff and students at Oxley Christian College. There is also an active young people’s group, meeting at the church each weekend and providing youth club activities and special events on a weekly basis. Some activities may also be offered during the school vacations.

University & Careers Guidance

Students completing Year 12 in Australia now have diverse career paths to choose from. While the majority of International students choose university to pursue degrees in Medicine, Engineering, Science, Information Technology, Business, Accounting and the Arts, others have followed alternative courses of study such as Tourism, Hospitality and IT at TAFE and other educational institutions. With an increased number of alternative educational institutions (including TAFE), there are many choices for graduating students.

Our Careers staff are expertly qualified and will carefully advise students on the choice of subjects, to ensure they meet the entrance requirements of their chosen course of study.

In addition to tertiary and career counselling and guidance, Oxley has extensive resources in the Careers Library to enable students to make informed decisions about their educational directions, career opportunities and courses of study in Australia. Careers staff will assist students in making entrance applications to university and other institutions.
